Cheshire Medical Center issued the following announcement on March 4.

For many transgender people seeking gender-affirming surgery to medically transition, the COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging as many non-emergency surgeries have been put on hold.

Oakland Walters, MD, a psychiatrist with Dartmouth-Hitchcock’s Transgender Health Program, told New Hampshire Public Radio that such delays can lead to increased anxiety, depression, substance use disorder and suicidal ideation for transgender people and those living with gender dysphoria.

“As a psychiatrist, practicing and seeing lots of transgender and gender diverse people – in my mind, the [surgeries] are more of medical necessity,” Dr. Walters said.
