Keene State College student Thomas (TJ) Mayfield shared on Mar. 11 how his experience in the Exercise Science – Human Performance major has shaped his academic and personal journey.
Mayfield, from Wethersfield, Connecticut, said that his time at Keene State has been transformative. “These have been the most progressive years of my life. I’m disciplined and resilient because of what I’ve learned here,” he said.
Initially uncertain about his direction, Mayfield found clarity after taking an introductory course in exercise science. He credits this class with setting him on a path toward coaching and mentoring others. Through internships and work in the athletic training center, he has designed strength programs, coached teams, and collaborated with staff to help athletes improve their performance and recover from injuries.
One significant moment for Mayfield was working with his first personal training client—a shy freshman who had never used a gym before. “Now he’s outgoing and crushing his workouts,” Mayfield said. “That transformation reminded me why I love this work.”
Beyond academics and athletics, Mayfield described finding a supportive community at Keene State. He also discovered new interests outside the gym, such as hiking local trails and skiing nearby mountains.
Looking ahead, Mayfield plans to continue coaching and strength conditioning after graduation in his hometown. He attributes his growth to Keene State’s focus on responsibility, trust, and helping others thrive through its liberal arts foundation and hands-on learning opportunities.
