Town of Swanzey issued the following announcement on October 15.

The Town of Swanzey is pleased to announce that Mr. Joseph Gonsalves has been hired to serve as the Town’s new Police Chief.  Mr. Gonsalves’s first day of work is expected to be October 25, 2021 and the Town will be scheduling a meet and greet opportunity.  Gonsalves will replace Officer in Charge Lt. James Cemorelis, who has been serving in that position since August 1st, when Chief Thomas De Angelis retired.

Mr. Gonsalves lives in Taunton, MA and has had a distinguished 30 plus year law enforcement career.  He served for 20 years with the Bristol, RI Police Department, working through the ranks and retiring as a lieutenant and patrol commander.  He then went on to work for the US Department of Veterans Affairs Police Department for 10 years, retiring as Chief of the Department. Mr. Gonsalves is also a veteran, who retired from the Army Reserves after 27 years of service.

Mr. Gonsalves was one of 10 applicants for the position and was selected after a thorough vetting process.  The hiring process included an initial interview with a screening panel of Town residents and local law enforcement professionals and a final interview with the Board of Selectmen.

Town Administrator Michael Branley stated, “The Board and I look forward to welcoming Mr. Gonsalves to the Swanzey community.  His combination of skills and experience make him an excellent candidate to manage one of the top law enforcement agencies in Cheshire County.”

Mr. Gonsalves stated, “I would like to thank the search committee for volunteering their time. I am thankful, honored, and appreciative that the search committee and Selectmen have selected me as the Police Chief of Swanzey.  I am fortunate and blessed to be working in a great community and with a great police department. I am very excited to start.”
