Keene Public Library: Great Books: Martin Luther King, Jr., "Letter from Birmingham Jail"; Elizabeth Hardwick, "The Apotheosis of Martin Luther King."

Great books

Keene Public Library recently issued the following announcement.

Welcome to the 34th year of our local Great Books Discussion group! Tonight's readings are Martin Luther King, Jr., "Letter From Birmingham Jail; and Elizabeth Hardwick, "The Apotheosis of Martin Luther King."

The group meets in the Miller Vincent Room on the 2nd Floor of the library, which is accessible by elevator or stairway.  Meetings are on Thursdays, starting at 2:00pm and ending about 3:30p.m.  Meetings are planned from September to May

Great Books discussions are dedicated to a close reading and exploration of the text, facilitated by the leader.  The leader does not act as a teacher, but poses questions that lead to a shared inquiry into the text's meaning and relevance.  We take turns acting as discussion facilitator.

Because meetings were canceled from March 2020 to June 2021 due to Covid, the group never discussed the readings scheduled for Spring 2020.  Thus, we will start this Fall  with those readings.

The readings are from two anthologies

Counterparts can be ordered online at greatbooks.org. If you wish to order by mail, order forms are available at the library's main desk (ask for Great Books folder.)

The Best American Essays of the Century, edited by Joyce Carol Oates and Robert Atwan is available from your usual bookseller in paperback.  The library has a copy of this book and many of the selections from both anthologies can be found in books available at the library.

If you would like to know more about Great Books discussion programs, please visit their website at www.greatbooks.org.  Copies of the reading schedule are available at. www.keenepubliclibrary.org/library/greatbooks
