Keene Public Library recently issued the following announcement.
Date: Tuesday, December 28, 2021
Time: 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM
This event is a documentary screening about N.H. composer Amy Beach and is followed by a discussion with the producers, John Gfroerer and Virginia Eskin. Following this event, there will be a reception in Heberton Hall.
On September 5, 1867, Amy Cheney was born in Henniker, New Hampshire. She would become one of the most respected and accomplished American composers of her time. Her story is not just about her musical accomplishments. As a child, her mother would not even let young Amy play the piano, despite obvious signs of her musical gifts. At eighteen, she married Boston physician Dr. Henry Harris Aubrey Beach, twenty-four years older. Though he encouraged her composition, he also gave up concertizing and public performance. After he died in 1910, she would resume her life as a concert pianist.
