Keene Public Library Screens Documentary on N.H. Composer Amy Beach

Keene

On Tuesday, December 28, 2021, at 6:30 p.m., Keene Public Library will screen a new documentary on New Hampshire composer Amy Beach.  The documentary maker, John Grfoerer, and collaborator Virginia Eskin, renowned solo pianist and adjunct professor of music at Keene State College, will be available to lead a discussion of how he came to make this film and what they learned along the way. In the documentary “Composer Amy Beach,” Beach’s story is told through interviews with Eskin and other experts. The screening is free, and light refreshments will be served.

On September 5, 1867, Amy Cheney was born in Henniker, New Hampshire.  She would become one of the most respected and accomplished American composers of her time. Her story is not just about her musical accomplishments. As a child, her mother would not even let young Amy play the piano, despite obvious signs of her musical gifts. At eighteen, she married Boston physician Dr. Henry Harris Aubrey Beach, twenty-four years older. Though he encouraged her composition, he also gave up concertizing and public performance. After he died in 1910, she would resume her life as a concert pianist.

Keene Public Library is located at 60 Winter Street. All Keene Public Library programs are provided by the Friends of the Keene Public Library. Keene Public Library is committed to providing a welcoming and inclusive experience for all. A hearing assistance system will be available. If you require another access service to participate or have any questions about accessibility fully, don't hesitate to contact Gail Zachariah at 603-352-0157.
