Cheshire Medical Center: Two years into pandemic, hospital leaders reflect on early days, what lies ahead

4

Cheshire Medical Center issued the following announcement on February 7.

Dartmouth-Hitchcock CEO and President Joanne Conroy, MD, and D-HH member hospital Cheshire Medical Center CEO and President Don Caruso, MD, both appeared as part of a special report on WMUR-TV recently for a look back at the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, and how their respective organizations have responded and adapted to the crisis.

"We forget when we look back then that we didn't have any testing. We were sending our tests down to Atlanta," Dr. Conroy told reporter Tim Callery, reflecting on the earliest days of COVID. "None of us had enough (personal protective equipment). We were counting masks. We were kind of making it up as we went along. All of us were setting up incident commands to figure out how can we protect the institution, the patients and the communities that we serve. So, it was intense."

The ever-evolving nature of the pandemic has been challenging for healthcare workers, Dr. Caruso reflected, especially in the beginning. "I think that is really key about early on," he said. "The changing of information was so incredibly difficult in terms of the experts. Do this. Do that. PPE should be this and then shouldn't be that."
